BIOGRAPHY

Floris A. Brown was born on 10 September 1948 in Worcester (South Africa). He is a poet, chess player, retired schoolteacher and also a prize-winning composer and musician. He organises chess tournaments, music and poetry workshops. In South Africa, he has read his work on TV and at quite a few poetry festivals, such as the Stellenbosschse Wordfees and the KKNK. His work is available in Britain, The Netherlands, the United States and of course in South Africa.

His poems have been published in Gerrit Komrij's substantial anthology De Afrikaanse poëzie in 1000 en enige gedichten, Honderd Dichters 1, Honderd Nieuwe Dichters 3, Aankoms uit die skemer, Groen, Reënboogstemme, Poskaarte, Litnet, Universal Poetry, Poetry Institute of Africa and in Nuwe verset. Two quotations by Floris A. Brown: "Doen alles wat jy doen so goed, dat andere moet sukkel om daarop te verbeter."(Do everything you do so well, that others need to struggle to better it) and "Sukses word gemeet aan diegene wat die wêreld ryker nalaat in dit wat hul kon bied in die tyd toe hul nog geleef het." (Success is determined by how a person enriches the world he leaves behind, by doing what he could in the time given him)
