FLEET AIR ARM 802 SQUADRON - Fighter, Gloster Sea Gladiator I

History | Operations and losses | Sources | Links | Books | Questions and/or remarks

At the outbreak of war the squadron was serving with HMS Glorious in the Mediterranean with 12 Sea Gladiators.

On 1 March 1940 Flight Lieutenant J.F. Marmont was promoted to operational commander of the 802 Squadron.

The squadron ceased to exist with the loss of HMS Glorious, sunk by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on 8 June 1940 during the defence of Norway.

On 11 June, Lt Cdr R. C.O. Hill, FAA Petty Officer Pilot R.T. Leggott of 802 Squadron and 37 other survivors from the Glorious and Acasta were picked up by Norwegian trawler Borgund (303grt) which landed them in the Faroes on the 13th.

The squadron was reformed in November 1940, lost with the sinking of HMS Audacity on 21 December 1941.
