He graduated in 1984 on a thesis about Willem
Bilderdijk's (1756-1831) translations of Horace.
In the same year he made his debut with poems published
in former literary magazine Maatstaf.
In 1993 he started writing essays for the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer and in 1996 he became a poetry critic for De Volkskrant. His favourite poets are H.H.
Ter Balkt, Willem Bilderdijk, Hugo
Claus, Chr.
J. van Geel, Horatius, Lucebert,
Kees
Ouwens, Pindaros
and Nachoem
M. Wijnberg. In 1997 he received the Van der Hoogt prize for his debut poetry volume Weloverwogen en onopgemerkt (Considered and Overlooked; Meulenhoff, 1996). In 2002 Gerbrandy received the Herman Gorter prize for his third volume De zwijgende man is niet bitter (The Silent Man Isn't Bitter). Which isn't to say his second volume Nors en zonder haten (Surly and without hate; Meulenhoff, 1999) is without merit: this volume was nominated for the VSB Poetry Prize. Gerbrandy lives and works in Winterswijk.
