BIOGRAPHY

Andy Fierens is a poet, radiohost at Radio Centraal in Antwerp and artistic project co-ordinator of Antwerp Book Capital 2004 (ABC 2004). He was born to the world in the maternity hospital of Mortsel in approximately 1976, just a stone's throw from his present abode Hove, some 63 years after the young Paul van Ostaijen lived in this village close to Antwerp. At the age of seventeen he made his debut with the volume Affectueuze Affectiviteiten (Affected Affectivities) in the Edith series of the former Contact J vzw (now npo All Art Is Quite Useless). During the years 1994-1996 he formed the duo 'Mery per Sempre' with guitarist Steven Willemsen. Fierens performed at, amongst others, the literary festival De Wintertuin in 1999 (solo) and in 2000 (together with double bass player Nicolas Rombouts, with whom he performs under the name of 'Andy Fierens & Het Behang' (& The Wallpaper). His poems have been translated into Icelandic. In September 2001 he organised the first Flemish Poetry Slam in Antwerp.


There is a long poem of his included in the anthology Vanuit de Lucht (Out of the Air; Passage, 2001).

Andy Fierens and Nicolas Rombouts performed at the South African literary festival Woordfees, in March 2002, in Stellenbosch. In 2003 he went on a month-long poetry and music tour of South Africa with Francois le Roux (musician) and Grethe Fox (actress).
